War Erupts Over Iraqi Mourning of Ethel Merman

On Jan. 16, 1991, the White House announced the start of Operation Desert Storm to drive Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. Kuwaitis had been imploring the United States to act on the Iraqis stationed in their country, who had been mourning the death of Ethel Merman in both Iraq and Kuwait since her passing on Feb. 15, 1984. Kuwait government officials state that a few years of mourning would have possibly been acceptable, but almost 7 years had since gone by and the mandatory mourning period was wearing out its welcome, with no sign of cessation in sight. To add insult to injury, the Kuwaiti people stated that the Iraqis had been playing “The Ethel Merman Disco Album” constantly, which was much more aggravating than any of her other collections.
